The Art of Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil, pronounced ver-may, is a technique that
originated in the 19th century. It involves applying a layer of gold over
sterling silver. At Temple of the Sun, we use 18K gold in all our vermeil gold
jewelry, ensuring the highest gold alloy percentage. Unlike standard gold
plating, vermeil requires a thicker gold coating,
typically 2.5 microns,
resulting in a superior and long-lasting finish.
Ethical and Recycled Solid Gold
Our ceremonial and delicate jewelry pieces are meticulously
handmade in our Byron Bay studio using responsibly sourced and recycled 9K,
14K, and 18K solid gold. We prioritize using gold that has been accredited by
RJC (Responsible Jewellery Council) for its social and environmental
responsibility. The gold alloys of 9K, 14K, and 18K are chosen for their
durability, quality, and elegant golden shine.
The Distinction: Gold Plating vs. Gold Vermeil
- Base
Metal: While gold plating can be applied to any metal, gold vermeil is
specifically applied under sterling silver. At Temple of the Sun, we use
ethical and recycled 925 sterling silver as the base metal for our gold
vermeil pieces, ensuring both quality and sustainability.
- Thickness
of Gold: Vermeil requires a minimum gold coating thickness of 2.5 microns,
making it significantly thicker and of higher quality compared to standard
gold plating, which typically has a minimum thickness of 0.5 microns.
- Durability:
Due to its added thickness, gold vermeil is much more durable than gold
plating, making it an environmentally friendly option that allows wearers
to cherish their Temple of the Sun jewelry for extended periods.
The Significance of 925 Sterling Silver
At Temple of the Sun, we prioritize quality and sustainability,
which is why we use recycled and ethically sourced 925 sterling silver as the
base metal for our gold vermeil pieces and all our silver jewelry. Sterling
silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper or other alloys, ensuring
durability and preventing breakage. Our silver jewelry is stamped with the
"925" hallmark, guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of our
craftsmanship. Moreover, all Temple of the Sun jewelry is nickel-free.
Temple of the Sun combines exceptional artistry, sustainable practices, and ethically sourced materials to create exquisite jewelry pieces that stand the test of time. Our dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility sets us apart. Explore our collections and discover the timeless beauty of Temple of the Sun jewelry.
